Live music returns! After a 16 month ‘forced hiatus’, we’re returning to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a series of blues concerts featuring us and a few of our pals hosted at Assembly George Square as part of the ‘MUSIC IN THE GARDENS’ program. Here’s what’s on.
Toby Mottershead: 26th Aug, 7:45pm – TICKETS
Acoustic and Steel guitar player, singer, and raconteur Toby Mottershead takes you on a tour of old time blues and gospel music – showcasing his obsession with artists like Blind Willie McTell, Robert Johnson, Rev Gary Davis and many more.
“He may just be a ‘grown-up skinny white boy in the wrong country singing the blues’ as he puts it, but Toby Mottershead, singer with the popular Edinburgh roots band Black Diamond Express, can sing naked blues with rough-grained eloquence”
Roots of the Blues, reviewed by The Scotsman’s Jim Gilchrist
Heavy Pockets: SOLD OUT
This Edinburgh trio have been digging deep in the mines of music to unearth some killer blues grooves from the vaults. Serving up the spirit of 50’s era Chicago – with a strong shot of Mississippi Hill Country blues and a chaser of gospel to wash away your sins – they’re just bound to put a tiger in your tank.
Heavy Pockets are Toby Mottershead (vocals/guitar), Ewan Gibson (bass), and Vid Gobac (drums).
The group initially came together to run blues workshops for the EJBF – and during lockdown, with no gigs to play, this gave the trio a reason to keep producing music and stay connected with their local community.
Jed Potts & the Hillman Hunters: SOLD OUT
Jed Potts is an Edinburgh-based guitarist and vocalist. He fronts Jed Potts & the Hillman Hunters and Jazz Bar residents Swampfog. He also plays with The Katet, Thunkfish and occasionally with Memphis-based blues artist Brandon Santini.
“Blues Titans Jed Potts & the Hillman Hunters are as timeless as the Classic British car but with the power, performance and refinement of a Formula One racer”
“A force to be reckoned with”
“A stellar six string strutter”
- Dave Scott, American Blues Scene
Nicole & The Backup Crew: SOLD OUT
This Old style up-tempo R&B group were bred from the Queens of the Blues show line up. Since then they became a regular gigging band throughout the year in many of Edinburgh’s staple music venues and around Scotland.
“The band are utterly fantastic” – BroadwayBaby
“Nicole Smit is capable of singing any damn thing she likes.” – Blues Enthused
The Blueswater: SOLD OUT
The Blueswater are an award-winning band that tours internationally. Influenced by gritty, old-school rhythm and blues they blend the Chicago sound of Chess records with the earthy, droning grooves of Mississippi to create a style that is truly unique. Thick guitar riffs and frenzied harmonica solos are built around driving rhythms to create raucous, high-energy performances. In 2011 they premiered their show BLUES! at the Edinburgh Fringe to great acclaim, and in 2012 received a “Mervyn Stutter Spirit of the Fringe” award. The show, a musical history of the blues genre, now regularly tours across the UK.
“The Blueswater have built a solid reputation in blues circles, both in Scotland and further afield” — The Scotsman
“Definitely a band to watch!” – Blues in Britain
“Foot tapping Blues played by great live performers” — Claire Cavanagh, BBC Bristol
Live music is nothing without a live audience!
